Immediate Steps for a Knocked-Out Tooth

  1. Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown (the white part), not the root
  2. Gently rinse the tooth with milk or saline solution if it's dirty (do NOT use water or scrub it)
  3. Try to reinsert the tooth into the socket if possible, facing the correct way
  4. If reinsertion isn't possible, store the tooth in milk, saline solution, or between your cheek and gums
  5. Control bleeding by applying gentle pressure with clean gauze or cloth
  6. Call our emergency dental line immediately at 833-420-8267
  7. Get to our office as quickly as possible (ideally within 30 minutes)

Our Emergency Knocked-Out Tooth Treatment

At Ohio Emergency Dental Services, we understand that dental trauma requires immediate attention. Our emergency dentists are skilled in treating knocked-out teeth (dental avulsion) to maximize the chances of saving your natural tooth.

Our Treatment Process:

Immediate Assessment

Quick evaluation of the tooth, socket, and surrounding tissues to determine the best course of action.

Tooth Reimplantation

Careful cleaning of the socket and reinsertion of the tooth into its proper position when possible.

Stabilization

Splinting the tooth to adjacent teeth to keep it stable during the healing process.

Root Canal Therapy

Often necessary for knocked-out permanent teeth that have been reimplanted.

Follow-up Care:

  • Antibiotics to prevent infection
  • Pain management for comfort during recovery
  • Careful monitoring of the reimplanted tooth
  • Dietary recommendations to protect the healing tooth
  • Regular check-ups to assess healing and tooth stability

Factors Affecting Successful Reimplantation

  • Time: The sooner the tooth is reimplanted, the better the chances of success
  • Storage medium: How the tooth was stored before treatment
  • Tooth handling: Minimal handling of the root surface improves outcomes
  • Age: Young patients often have better reimplantation success
  • Overall oral health: Good oral health supports better healing

If Reimplantation Isn't Possible

In some cases, the knocked-out tooth cannot be saved. We offer several tooth replacement options:

  • Dental implants: The most natural-looking and functioning replacement
  • Dental bridges: Fixed replacements anchored to adjacent teeth
  • Partial dentures: Removable replacements for one or more teeth
